Adjunct Professor, Predatory Lending

Michael D. Mitchell is the National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s (NCRC) Vice President of Fair Lending. In this position Michael spearheads the coalitions mystery shopping/testing program, works on complaint mediation, as well as working on the new Colonias project, which is in the process of establishing a fair housing organization in the El Paso Texas which will serve the Colonias region along the US / Mexican border. Michael brings to NCRC a longtime commitment to civil rights, and economic justice. He has worked in the field of civil rights law enforcement for past 15 years. Upon graduation from high school in Newton, MA., Michael moved to Atlanta and matriculated at Morehouse College where he majored in political science. He is also a graduate of the Boalt Hall School of Law, at the University of California Berkeley. Yes, Michael is a recovering attorney, having practiced law in Oakland, California for three years, working both as a solo practitioner and serving as an associate in the Law offices of Richard R Wright. From 1989 to1995, Michael worked for the City Rockville, Maryland, where he initially served Rockville’s Human Rights Commission as a Human Rights investigator and later served as the City’s Human Rights Officer. In this position he worked to enforce Rockville’s Human Rights Ordinance as it pertained to discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations.

Before joining NCRC, Michael worked for seven years with the Equal Rights Center and the Fair Housing Center of Greater Washington where he served that organization as the Director of Enforcement, and the Director of the Fair Housing Center of Suburban Maryland. In these positions Michael conducted testing of housing providers, public accommodations, insurance companies, and lenders, and participated in several cases that led to landmark decisions. Michael was also involved in fair housing planning, education and outreach, and voluntary compliance training. When not working for economic justice, Michael can usually be found dispensing justice on a nearby tennis court, prognosticating about sports, or working around the home he shares with his wife and daughter in Silver Spring, Maryland.
